My God!!

My God!!,the Presidency and the National Assembly spend more than 4billion Euros every year on expenses .The CBN governor confirmed they spend about 25% of overhead budget of our country;Nigeria.HABA!!this is not right. If countries like Portugal could lay their hands on such money, they would be out of recession. This is... absolute waste of resources.Somebody pls tell them to waste a drop of that amount on the masses.

History and news about Nigeria General Election - 9.04.2011

A presidential election is to be held in Nigeria on 9 April 2011.The election follows controversy as to whether a Muslim or Christian should be allowed to become president given the tradition of rotating the top office between the regions and following the death of Umaru Yar'Adua, who was a Muslim, and Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian, assuming the interim presidency.
Candidates

There are sixty-three registered political parties in Nigeria, for which it was not clear how many would field candidates.

As this was supposed to be the turn of a Muslim candidate, it was not controversial to have Ibrahim Babangida, a former general and military ruler, and Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, say they would be running for the presidency.

After initial doubts, the as yet unelected president Goodluck Jonathan declared his intention to run for the presidency on 18 September, 2010.
Muhammadu Buhari was nominated by Congress for Progressive Change.

Campaign

Following a bombing in Abuja during Nigeria's 50th anniversary celebrations and the consequent arrest and interrogation of the Director General of Babangida campaign, Raymond Dokpesi, there were calls for him to quit the race. In addition, there were others who linked his affiliated to the blasts. He responded in saying it would be "idiotic to link" him with attack. Even before the blasts, however, some of his former loyalists, popularly called "IBB Boys," apparently asked him to quit the presidential race so as not to avoid being rubbished by a non-General.

Controversy

In September 2010, the election commission requested a postponement of the polls citing the need for more time to overhaul the national electoral register. Critics were upset over the proposal. The election was postponed from January to April due to the release of a new electronic voter registration software.
In December 2010, bombs went off in Yenegoa, Bayelsa State during a gubernatorial campaign rally. There were also bombings and shooting in the north blamed on Boko Haram. Politicians and police said that the campaign of violence aimed to disrupt the election.

Nigeria ex-military ruler picked for presidency bid

ABUJA  - A Nigerian opposition party on Tuesday confirmed ex-military ruler Muhammadu Buhari as its presidential candidate for April elections, set to be the most fiercely contested since the return to democracy 12 years ago.

The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) ratified Buhari's nomination at a convention in the capital Abuja, almost a month after the former strongman announced his intention to seek the party's ticket.

Buhari's reputation as a disciplinarian and a popular perception that he is cleaner than many in the political elite could make him the main opposition candidate to run against the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) nominee.

President Goodluck Jonathan is broadly considered the front runner in the PDP primaries on January 13, but his candidacy is contentious because of an unwritten PDP pact that power rotates between the mostly-Muslim north and largely-Christian south every two terms.

Jonathan is a southerner who inherited the presidency after his predecessor Umaru Yar'Adua, a northerner, died last year during his first term. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a northerner, is challenging him at the PDP primaries.

Violence in recent weeks, including a New Year's eve bomb attack in Abuja and a series of blasts and clashes in the central city of Jos, has raised fears that politicians will try to exploit regional rivalries as the elections approach.

Buhari ruled Africa's most populous nation for 20 months between 1983-85. He came to power in an almost bloodless New Year's eve coup, ending Nigeria's second attempt at democracy.

His iron-fisted administration is best remembered for its austerity measures, the jailing of politicians on corruption charges and the execution of drug traffickers.

Buhari could benefit if Jonathan's candidacy continues to divide the PDP, whose candidate has won every presidential election in Nigeria since the end of military rule in 1999.

But critics say the CPC is more of a regional party and doubt its chances in a national election. Delegates sang the party anthem at Tuesday's televised convention in the northern Hausa language, which is not widely understood in the south.Source Reuters agency
